Well, I'm back in New York after a whirlwind weekend in Miami for my bridal shower and a mini bachelorette bash. It was a wonderful time spent with many of my most favorite people in the world. For the first time in a long time, I didn't travel with sneakers or workout gear... I simply took a few days to revel in my bride status without worrying about anything else. My only regret is that I didn't eat more of this cake. Seriously.
Now it's Monday and I'm reminded how tricky the transition from play to work can truly be. Travel throws most of us completely of our schedule and routine, and I know that it's easy to feel like you need a vacation from your actual vacation. In that spirit, I wanted to share a few tricks I have for easing back into "real life" after a fab getaway.
/// Don't throw yourself into a workout tailspin. This probably isn't what you were expecting to read here, but hear me out. You're off-kilter when you leave home and chances are your diet changes and so does your sleep. These two factors mean that your body might not be ready for that Spinning or HIIT class. Try a slower-paced workout instead. This evening I'm going to take it easy with a treadmill climb and a little bit of lifting. Intense cardio can wait another day.
/// Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. When I'm at work or at home, I always have a water bottle in my hand that I refill throughout the day. When I'm away, I tend to forget to keep up with my usually high water intake. I couldn't believe how dehydrated and thirsty I felt this morning. Make sure you're drinking as much water as possible when you're away - no matter the climate - and be sure to give your water bottle a little extra lovin' that first day back.
/// If you overdid it on something, cut back on it for a few days. Between a few really indulgent meals out and that above cake that I wish I'd eaten more of, I was gettin' carby with it over the weekend. So this week, I'm going to focus on greens, lean proteins, and nutrient-packed smoothies. Today I had smoked salmon for breakfast, a big salad for lunch, a mini-smoothie for a snack and I'm making turkey meatball and roasted veggie bowls for dinner.
/// Get into bed earlier. The Real Housewives can wait. Put your DVR to work and focus on getting into bed an hour or so before you normally would. Leave your TV off, your phone in a different room and read a book or magazine if you need a little distraction before dozing off.
/// Reflect. Take time to appreciate the trip you've just returned from. For me, this means writing lots of thank you notes for all of the people who celebrated with me this weekend. Went off your diet or skipped the gym for a few days? Don't beat yourself up. Remember why you did the things you did and think about what you would do differently next time. I'm home for the rest of May and June (yahoo!) but I'm looking forward to heading to the west coast in July... and I'll definitely be packing my sneaks!
How do you get back to reality after a weekend away?
